OBSERVED: No Single Saraki Poster In Port Harcourt Hours Before PDP Presidential Primary

At the entrance of the gate, there were about six big banners of Atiku Abubakar. Posters of Aminu Tambuwal also flooded the venue, and were located a few metres away from the stadium. Part of the fence which formed a perimeter around the venue was also covered with posters of Tambuwal. However, a survey by SaharaReporters revealed that there was no poster of Senate President Bukola Saraki.
Adokiye Amasiemeka Stadium in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, is currently a beehive of activities ahead of Saturday's presidential primary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Twelve aspirants are seeking the party's presidential ticket for 2019 general election.
The 12 candidates seeking to unseat President Muhammadu Buhari are: Atiku Abubakar, Sule Lamido, David Mark, Bukola Saraki, Ahmed Makarfi, Aminu Tambuwal, Datti Baba-Ahmed and Ibrahim Dankwambo.
Others are Attahiru Bafarawa, Jonah Jang, Kabiru Turaki and Rabiu Kwankwaso.
Also, the space at the front of the gate has more than 50 white canopies. Two of the canopies bear a big banner of Attahiru Bafarawa, and were populated by Hausa-speaking people. There were some Fulani indigenes there as well.
A few people, who wore white, also clustered around a canopy beside a well-painted street-light pole strategising on Bafarawa's chances of winning the ticket.
Other canopies were taken over by people selling drinks, foods and all sorts of PDP-themed items, including the party’s flags, caps and wristbands.
There venue is manned by the heavily-armmed security operatives.

Congolese Physician, Human Rights Activist Win Nobel Peace Prize

While Mukwege is the world’s leading medical expert on ‘repairing’ the internal physical damage caused by (gang) rape, Nadia is a human rights activist from Iraq.
Denis Mukwege, a gynaecologist from the Democratic Republic of Congo and Yazdi Human Rights Activist, Nadia Murad have won the Nobel Peace Prize.
They were honoured for their efforts at tackling sexual violence in war situations.
While Mukwege is the world’s leading medical expert on ‘repairing’ the internal physical damage caused by (gang) rape, Nadia is a human rights activist from Iraq.
A statement announcing the winners on Friday, read in part: "The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the Nobel Peace Prize for 2018 to Denis Mukwege and Nadia Murad for their efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war and armed conflict. Both laureates have made a crucial contribution to focusing attention on, and combating, such war crimes.
"Denis Mukwege is the helper who has devoted his life to defending these victims. Nadia Murad is the witness who tells of the abuses perpetrated against herself and others. Each
of them in their own way has helped to give greater visibility to war-time sexual violence, so that the perpetrators can be held accountable for their actions.
"The physician Denis Mukwege has spent large parts of his adult life helping the victims of sexual violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Since the Panzi Hospital was established in Bukavu in 2008, Dr. Mukwege and his staff have treated thousands of patients who have fallen victim to such assaults. Most of the abuses have been committed in the context of a long-lasting civil war that has cost the lives of more than six million Congolese.
"Nadia Murad is herself a victim of war crimes. She refused to accept the social codes that require women to remain silent and ashamed of the abuses to which they have been subjected. She has shown uncommon courage in recounting her own sufferings and speaking up on behalf of other victims.
"Nadia Murad is a member of the Yazidi minority in northern Iraq, where she lived with her family in the remote village of Kocho. In August 2014 the Islamic State (IS) launched a
brutal, systematic attack on the villages of the Sinjar district, aimed at exterminating the Yazidi population. In Nadia Murad’s village, several hundred people were massacred. The
younger women, including underage children, were abducted and held as sex slaves.
"While a captive of the IS, Nadia Murad was repeatedly subjected to rape and other abuses. Her assaulters threatened to execute her if she did not convert to their hateful, inhuman version of Islam. Nadia Murad is just one of an estimated 3 0 00 Yazidi girls and women who were victims of rape and other abuses by the IS army. The abuses were systematic, and part of a military strategy. Thus they served as a weapon in the fight against Yazidis and other religious minorities."

EXCLUSIVE: David Mark, Lamido, Dankwambo To Step Down For Tambuwal ‘Within 48 Hours’

“The Tambuwal camp has been able to reach out to some of the aspirants,” said a source very familiar with ongoing 59th-minute-of-the-eleventh hour meetings. “They have been able to get David Mark, Lamido, Dankwambo to step down for Tambuwal between today and at the convention ground tomorrow. For now that is the plan. They are also trying to work with Kwanwaso but he has not given them any positive response for now. They are working on Ahmed Makarfi as well.”
High-wire, last-minute political horse-trading is likely to see at least three Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential aspirants step down for Aminu Tambuwal, Governor of Sokoto State, SaharaReporters has been told.
Tambuwal is favourite to clinch the ticket, as he has the backing of Nyesom WIke, Governor of Rivers State, who is currently the party’s biggest financier.
The Tambuwal group is said to be pushing, and has made considerable progress, for the withdrawal of Sule Lamido, former Governor of Jigawa State and former Foreign Affairs Minister; David Mark, former Senate President, Niger State Governor and Communications Minister; and Ibrahim Dankwambo, the outgoing Governor of Gombe State, from the race to support the former House of Representatives Spesker.
“They are also trying to work with Kwanwaso but he has not given them any positive response for now. They are working on Ahmed Makarfi as well.”
However, according to the source, the proposed withdrawal of these aspirants is only part of a larger scheme to ensure Tambuwal emerges winner at all costs. The main scheme, he says, is to tamper with the delegates list.
“There is a process of selecting delegates across the states. For states where they have loyalists, and for states where they have governors who dance to the tune of Wike, they are trying to manufacture some delegates.
“You have statutory delegates, automatic delegates. Automatic delegates are the EXCO members, statutory delegates are former governors, former deputy governors and members of the House of Assembly and so on, while there are also delegates from the local governments. Now, most aspirants don’t know who is who across the states, since they’re coming from the national level.
“So what they did was that they put two, three up to 10 names that are a bit shady on the final delegates list; you cannot trace them as members of the House of Assembly, you cannot trace them as Local Government EXCO. For example, for states where they have 10 members of the House of Assembly that are members of PDP, they tried to make it 15 or 20. And it’s a total of around 700 that, if push comes to shove, they would use for Tambuwal as guaranteed delegates.
“But they are also doing that to justify the shady delegates list they’re preparing. If these guys step down, it will look to the people as though the supporters of these aspirants were the ones who voted for Tambuwal.”
When contacted, Simeon Nwakaudu, Tambuwal's spokesman, declined to react.

“If you want to give, put the money in an envelop, and give it the celebrant. Let’s know that anybody hawking and writing on the naira will face six months in jail or N50,000 or both.”

Delta PDP Chairman Slaps Election Official As Police Fire Gunshots To Disrupt Primary

The state party chairman, who is said to be supporting the federal lawmaker, slapped one of the officials conducting the primary. At this point, pandemonium broke out, which led to the disruption of the exercise, and security agents began shooting sporadically.
There was pandemonium in Asaba, the Delta State capital, on Wednesday following sporadic shootings by armed policemen during the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primary for Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency, held at the Cenotaph.
Trouble started on Wednesday, when Mrs. Mrakpor, wife of the Delta State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, and the PDP state chairman, Kingsley Esiso, disrupted the exercise when the federal lawmaker saw that she was losing out in the primary to former member of the House of Representatives, Ndidi Elumelu.
Our correspondent, who monitored the primary election, observed that Mrakpor left her seat, went straight to the spot where collation of results was going on and began to challenge the party officials conducting the primary.
As the situation became more heated, security operatives attached to the federal lawmaker fired several shots into the air, and in the process, the lawmaker's husband and the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Peter Mrakpor, who was at the venue of the exercise, put a call across to Esiso, who thereafter arrived the venue in his car.
On arrival, the state party chairman, who is said to be supporting the federal lawmaker, slapped one of the officials conducting the primary. At this point, pandemonium broke out, which led to the disruption of the exercise, and security agents began shooting sporadically. Policemen also fired tear gas canisters into the crowd.
As the crisis was raging, Mrakpor was arrested and taken to the state Police Command, where the state Commissioner of Police, Muhammed Mustafa, intervened and the counting process of the votes was concluded in the premises of the police headquarters.
Eventually, the former federal lawmaker and younger brother of the chairman of United Bank for Africa, Mr. Ndidi Elumelu emerged the PDP candidate for the Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency in the 2019 general election.

My administration will transform Imo State- AAC governorship aspirant

History was made following the state congresses and primaries of African Action Congress recently held in Owerri as Dr (Mrs.) Chidi Omeogu–Ogbuta emerged the first female governorship candidate in Imo state ahead of the 2019 general elections.
In her acceptance speech, the medical practitioner cum entrepreneur stated that Imo State’s current socio-economic and political status is in dire need of redemption which is why her nomination marks a new beginning, a journey to take back what has been stolen from the people, a call to action by the youths and women to become active participants in the craft of political leadership.
Dr Ogbuta maintained that her vision for Imo will be accomplished through service, transparency, accountability and respect which she tagged ‘STAR’.
The advocate for healthy living for all Imo people irrespective of socio-economic status added that the battle towards bridging the gap of female absence in the political sphere has been broken as she stands for gender parity and equity in governance.
According to her, “My victory at the primaries is a momentous one for me and all the women around the world, especially in Imo State because a situation such as we are experiencing here today – having a female governorship candidate in Imo – would have been highly improbable a couple of decades ago. However, by the providence of Almighty God and the uncommon vision and platform of the African Action Congress, this has become a reality.”
“With utmost humility, I stand before you to accept this historic nomination to be the Imo State flag bearer of the African Action Congress- AAC for the 2019 gubernatorial election. My nomination marks a watershed moment in our party’s quest to usher in a new alternative to politics in our State and I dare say, in Nigeria as a whole.
My nomination today is the beginning of a journey to take back what has been stolen from our people. My nomination today is a call to action – action by the youths and women to become active participants in the craft of political leadership.”
“The battle has just started toward bridging the gaping female absence in our politics, and hence represents the pursuit of gender parity and equity in public life and governance. I am a mother of 4 children, a wife, a registered nurse, a doctor, an entrepreneur, a leader, founder and president of “Angel For Premature Babies,” a non-profit Foundation that champions the cause of maternal and infant health, especially the premature.
I have always been an advocate for premature babies, a passion borne out of personal experience. I am also an advocate for health equity who believes everyone deserves to live a healthy life, regardless of their socio-economic status.
I have worked in different capacities in the health care industry for more than 20 years. Through these varied positions and experiences, I developed translatable skills in the areas of interpersonal relations, leadership, conflict resolution, strategic planning, and decision-making at all organizational levels.”
“Imo State, given her current status, is in dire need of socio-economic and political redemption. The State has been traumatized for a period of over eleven years now, having become impotent, dysfunctional, and rudderless.
Imo is in critical need of rescue and restoration, and I’m urging all Imolites, wherever they are to join forces in liberating our entire state from this destructive stranglehold that has turned our minor economic ulcer into a major economic cancer. I remember several years ago when Owerri, our capital city, used to be the envy of the nation in cleanliness. What we see in Imo State now are cities riddled with filth, famine, and frustration.”
“Our people have, in many cases, been reduced to a lifestyle of begging, disease and untimely death which has now sadly become an industry.
We must simply say “No’ to 4-cups of rice or N13 per day and vote your conscience. The State Government under my leadership will strive to recover, restore and transform Imo State to a position of pre-eminence that will ensure the welfare and pride of Imolites. This will be accomplished through Service, Transparency, Accountability, and Respect.”
The AAC guber candidate however expressed gratitude to members of the National Working Committee and leaders of the party as well as those who contributed to the success of the primary.
“I will like to use this opportunity to express my gratitude to members of the National Working Committee and leaders of our party, as well as all those who have contributed to the success of this primary. Together we can turn Imo into an Eldorado”she submitted.h

It is in this regard that I wholeheartedly congratulate the winner of the Lagos State APC Primaries, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu and urge all Lagosians to immediately support our party’s gubernatorial candidate in the 2019 elections and work for the success of our dear party," he said.
Akinwummi Ambode, incumbent Governor of Lagos State, has accepted defeat in his efforts to become the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2019 governorship election in the state.
Ambode made the announcement on Wednesday during a very brief media address broadcast by Lagos television.

I strongly believe that the time has now come for the State to move forward in order that the gains of the last three and half years are not lost," he said.

Court Faults IG For Ignoring Senate’s Invitation

Justice John Tsoho yesterday said Idris’ excuse was not tenable, and that the two suits he filed in relation to the invitation amounted to an abuse of court processes.
A Federal High Court in Abuja has faulted the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, for refusing to honour the Senate’s invitation on the trial of Senator Dino Melaye.
Justice John Tsoho yesterday said Idris’ excuse was not tenable, and that the two suits he filed in relation to the invitation amounted to an abuse of court processes.
The IG filed the suits earlier in the year to challenge the Senate’s insistence that he must honour its invitation in person, and its subsequent declaration that he was not fit to occupy public office.
The Senate had, by an April 25 letter, invited the IG following alleged inhuman treatment of Melaye, and the killings in Benue, Plateau, Kwara states, and others.
Idris, who was expected to appear before the Senate the following day, sent the deputy inspector general of Police (Operations) and commissioner of Police, Kogi State, to represent him.
The Senate refused to grant the men audience, and insisted Idris must appear in person.
The lawmakers rescheduled the meeting for May 2 and again directed that the IG honours its invitation in person.
But the IG filed the first suit on April 30, through his lawyer, Alex Izinyon (SAN), contending, among others, that he was not required under any known law to honour every invitation in person.
He argued that by the Constitution and Police Act, he can delegate responsibilities, and direct subordinates to represent him, and his choice of the DIG (Operations) and Kogi State Police commissioner was because they were conversant with the issues.
Justice Tsoho upheld the argument by the defendants – the Senate and its president – to the effect that the IG’s suits were intended to hinder the Senate from performing its responsibilities.
His judgment was on one of both suits. He declined to determine the second suit on the grounds that having rendered his opinion on one, he would prefer another judge hears and determine the second.
He returned the file to the chief judge for reassignment.
The judge said although the IG could be excused for not honouring the first invitation because he accompanied President Muhammadu Buhari on an official trip, there was no justification for not honouring the second invitation.
Justice Tsoho noted that the IG, having had knowledge of the Senate’s invitation, his excuse that he could not attend the second invitation because he was on an official trip to Birnin Gwari with the general officer commanding, was “not tenable”.
The judge said: “I do not see any harm that would have been caused if the plaintiff honoured the defendants’ invitation. I uphold the defendants’ argument that the plaintiff’s suit is intended to prevent the exercise of the Senate’s legitimate and constitutional responsibility, and that it constitutes an abuse of court process.”

Looters List: EFCC Opposes Bid To Jail Lai Mohammed

“The minister of information is not a party to the criminal proceedings against the applicant. There was nothing that connects the Ministry of Information to the motion, which was taken out to annoy the prosecution. The motion is lacking in substance; it is an abuse of the court’s process and should be dismissed.”
THE Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) yesterday urged the Federal High Court in Lagos to dismiss an application by a former Finance Minister (State) Mrs. Nenadi Usman seeking to summon Minister of Information Lai Mohammed for publishing her name as an alleged looter.
Mrs. Usman, who is on trial for alleged money laundering before Justice Rilwan Aikawa, initiated contempt proceedings before the same judge against Mohammed after he released her name as one of the treasury looters.
But, EFCC lawyer Rotimi Oyedepo said the application was “parasitic” and a ploy to delay the former minister’s trial.
He argued that Mrs. Usman ought to have filed a separate civil suit for libel against Mohammed rather initiating contempt proceedings before the judge she is undergoing trial.
In a motion on notice filed through her lawyer Chief Ferdinand Orbih (SAN), Mrs. Usman argued that the inclusion of her name on the looters’ list while her case was pending in court was contemptuous.
According to her, the Minister of Information was aware of the charge against her, yet he caused to be published a list of looters in several media platforms on April 1, where her name featured prominently as having looted N1.5 billion.
Orbih urged the court to grant his client leave for Mohammed to appear to show cause as to why he should not be committed to prison for contempt.
The SAN said Mohammed’s publication of Usman’s name as a looter undermined the court’s authority, adding that should the court fail to punish Mohammed, its integrity would be questioned by the public.
But, Oyedepo argued that the newspaper publications cited by Orbih did not expressly declare Usman as a looter.
He said the reports used the expression “alleged looter”, which he said was in conformity with the charge against Usman.
“There is nowhere in Exhibit A (newspaper report), where the defendant is described as a looter of public treasury. What was published is an allegation which is yet to be proven,” he said.
Oyedepo also disagreed with Orbih that the contempt issue must be determined before trial can proceed, adding that Usman’s application “is naked”.
Orbih had argued that contempt proceedings were criminal in nature and must be dispensed with as a matter of priority before the substantive trial can continue.
But, Oyedepo said anyone who claims that his or her reputation was maligned should seek remedy in court.
He said: “The minister of information is not a party to the criminal proceedings against the applicant.
“There was nothing that connects the Ministry of Information to the motion, which was taken out to annoy the prosecution.
“The motion is lacking in substance; it is an abuse of court’s process and should be dismissed.”
The EFCC re-arraigned Usman and former Minister of Aviation Chief Femi Fani-Kayode for alleged N4.6 billion fraud, to which they pleaded not guilty.
The former ministers were charged along with former Chairman of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) and ex-Chairman of Kagarko Local Government Area of Kaduna State Mr. Yusuf Danjuma and a company, Jointrust Dimentions Nigeria Limited.
The four were also accused of indirectly retaining N300 million, N400 million and N800 million, all proceeds of corruption, according to EFCC. The prosecution said they allegedly committed the offence between January 8 and March 25, 2015, ahead of the general election.
Justice Aikawa adjourned till October 16 and 19 for ruling.

Lagos APC Primary Fine, Oshiomhole Tells Buhari

“I told the President that the primaries held as planned and everything is being done to ensure there is no violence because democracy doesn’t flourish with violence."
All Progresives Congress (APC) National Chairman Adams Oshiomhole has dismissed fears that yesterday’s governorship primary in Lagos State was controversial.
He said the party leadership was in control of the shadow election.
Speaking at the Presidential Villa after a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari, the former Edo State Governor said: “I told the President that the primaries held as planned and everything is being done to ensure there is no violence because democracy doesn’t flourish with violence.
“Nigerians must begin to learn how to differ in opinion and in choice without fighting; this is something people have to acquire over time.
“For me, I’m excited that if we can do it in Lagos, it can be done anywhere.
“Everything that is being done is done under the control, supervision and direction of the NWC.’’
In Lagos, the Clement Ebri Election Committee said the exercise did not receive its blessing because the conditions prescribed were not followed.
Party Chairman Tunde Balogun rejected the Committee’s verdict, saying the election was free and fair.
Leaders of the party, including Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Deputy Governor Idiat Adebule, Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, commissioners, aspirant Babajide Sanwo-Olu and party members who turned out in large numbers, participated in the election.
But Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, who was in his hometown Epe for the primary, remained indoors.
Reporteers who accompanied him to Epe were asked to leave for Lagos shortly before 11a.m.
Ebri said at about 4.30 pm when he addressed the media was just ready for the primary.
He said he had contacted the APC national secretariat for further directives.
“We are ready to give the state the most credible election. It is not our fault that this exercise took this long. In some states, primary has been moved to Thursday.
“We were waiting for the (Lagos State) party chairman to provide certain information that will enable us post people to the wards. We have two aspirants and we needed to be fair to both parties. The information we demanded for came in about an hour ago. And we had to struggle this period to balance the equation,” Ebri said, adding:
“We have five persons from the local organising committee and four for each ward. They will all go out to ensure the primary is conducted. We all understand the terrain in the state, especially as it concerns the traffic situation. So, the materials are available now and ready for deployment.
“The national secretariat advised us to use ballot papers and we came into Lagos with thousands of them. But during the stakeholders meeting, it became obvious that the state chapter of the party wasn’t ready for such primary. They claimed that there was no time to educate the members and others. And based on the submission made at the stakeholders meeting, some changes were made.
“And we were advised to conduct the open ballot in a manner that would be objective to all parties. And that is one of the adjustments we made to accommodate views of the stakeholders.
“We had a session with representatives of both aspirants here at about 8 am. And we asked that they should bring names of their representatives that would be used for the exercise. But the names didn’t arrive early from both parties.”
Ebri went on: “Because of the political tension in the state, we decided to be very careful, very methodical and very meticulous in doing it. As party men, peace is very important to us than victory; we want victory that will be celebrated by both parties; we want victory that will be credible; a victory that will be in line with the guidelines and extant rules and laws in this country. We are ready to go to the field and execute this in clinical fashion.
“Lagos is a flagship of APC and must continue to remain so for years to come and so in conducting anything that has to do with Lagos, we have to do it with a lot of circumspection and objectivity and it should be a showpiece for the rest of the country.
Displaying the result sheets, the Panel Chairman said it was “in impeccable condition and not one single sheet is missing and it is not possible for this committee to do any other thing than it has been instructed to do”.
“We have guidelines and we will stick to those guidelines to be sure that we are fair to both parties.”
Balogun insisted that the primary was devoid of violence and, therefore, credible.
He said the agents of the two parties were present at the wards where the election took place and that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and election observers witnessed the exercise.
“The election took place simultaneously in all the 245 wards. Some of our members were visible in the local governments. For example our national leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu was at Ikeja, his own ward.
“He took part in the election and we saw the results. The results have been signed by the agents of the two aspirants. Those results were credible because the INEC too were there and they all signed. We were all witnesses to the conduct of the election. There were no violence, no chaos; it was free, fair and transparent.”
Asked whether any member of the NWC panel members was there, he said: ‘’What I know is that I did not go round the wards. The venue I went to, I saw some observers apart from the agents and INEC. They were publicly conducted, constitutionally done and I think we will leave the rest for the people and the press . That is why we have to wait for the committee charged with the responsibility to announce the results. We are not to announce the results.
Some women from Shomolu/Bariga who protested at the Ikeja hotel where the panel members addressed the media, complained that they were not allowed to vote in their wards because they are known supporters of Governor Ambode.

Lagos APC announces Sanwo-Olu winner of primary condemned by electoral chief

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressive Congress has announced the final results of the controversial primaries held for governorship aspirants on Tuesday.
Tunde Balogun, APC Lagos chairman, declared Jide Sanwo-Olu winner of the election with 970, 851 votes. Incumbent Akinwunmi Ambode scored 72,901. The race has been between the two.
Mr Balogun made the announcement despite the position of the party’s electoral committee which was sent by the National Working Committee to conduct and supervise the exercise.
The committee members addressed a press briefing around 4:00 p.m., saying they were unaware of any election and effectively nullified the exercise whose results Mr Balogun announced tonight.
The chairman of the committee, Clement Ebiri, also told PREMIUM TIMES at about 6 p.m. that no primaries held and his committee was still with the materials to be used for the primaries.
Multiple sources at the APC national secretariat in Abuja told PREMIUM TIMES Tuesday night that fresh primaries might hold on Wednesday.
But late on Tuesday, TVC News reported that party chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, said the results announced by Mr Balogun would stand.
If Mr Oshiomhole indeed supported the primaries that held Tuesday, it would mark an apparent nullification of the decision of the committee he sent to the state.
Tuesday’s exercise was consumed by controversy almost as soon voting started at ward units across the state in the morning.
The exercise was conducted via direct primaries method, but loyalists of Mr Ambode alleged disenfranchisement and threatened to hold their own exercise.
Mr Ambode’s supporters accused Lagos APC leaders of employing high-handed tactics to ensure the victory of Mr Sanwo-Olu.

Saraki, Dogara absent at Independence Day Parade

Senate President Bukola Saraki and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, are both absent at Eagle Square Abuja where the nation’s 58th Independence anniversary parade is holding.
Present at the parade are President Muhammadu Buhari; his vice, Yemi Osinbajo; the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen; and former Head of State, Yakubu Gowon among others.
After the ceremonial parade comprising of the Armed Forces, police and other para-military agencies, there will also be a parade of the nation’s military hardware as well as air displays.
A photo exhibition depicting Nigerian history and an independence day dinner are also slated for today as part of the ceremonies to mark the 58th Independence anniversary celebrations.
Efforts to speak with the spokesperson of Mr Saraki, Yusuph Olaniyonu, were unsuccessful as his phone number could not be reached.
However, the spokesperson of Mr Dogara, Turaki Hassan, said he has no idea if his boss was invited to the event or why he is not attending.
“Actually, I am out of Abuja and I don’t know what is happening there,” he said.
Messrs Saraki and Dogara recently left the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) and rejoined the Peoples Democratic Party.
While Mr Saraki is one of the aspirants to the office of president in the 2019 election, Mr Dogara is seeking re-election as a member of the House of Representatives.

INEC Will Be 'Exactly Independent', Buhari Declares In Independence Day Speech

Stressing his support for credible elections, he said: "I have committed myself many times to ensuring that elections are fully participatory, free and fair and that the Independent National Electoral Commission will be exactly INDEPENDENT and properly staffed and resourced. The ballot box is how we make our choice for the governments that rule in our name."
President Muhammadu Buhari has restated his commitment to ensuring free, fair and credible elections in the country.
He stated this in a speech he delivered on Monday morning to mark the celebration of the 58th anniversary of Nigeria's Independence.
Noting that the day is one of celebration and solemn reflection, the President commended those who had sacrificed for the realisation of an independent Nigeria.
Buhari also highlighted some of the achievements of his administration in areas such as economy, security, insurgency, among others, and reaffirmed his determination to continue to work towards national development.
THE FULL SPEECH
Today is a day of celebration and solemn reflection. It is the anniversary of the day Nigerians realised one of the most cherished of human desires – the desire for freedom. We, therefore, give thanks to and remember our founding fathers who laboured so hard and sacrificed so much to build and bequeath to us this wonderful nation. It is our duty to consolidate this great legacy.
On this first October date and on the eve of the start of the general election cycle, we should do well to reflect on what binds us together and the great strength our diversity bestows on us. Ours is an ambitious nation, and, as citizens we have every right to look forward to the future with confidence and optimism which are well founded, considering where we find ourselves today.
There has been a steady improvement in the security situation in the North East. We remain committed to ending the crisis and make the North East safe for all.
Our thoughts and prayers are always with the victims of the Boko Haram’s atrocities and their families. Beyond that, we know that the goals of the Boko Haram terrorists include capturing territories, destroying our democracy and denying our children the right to education. We will not allow them to succeed.
I want at this point to pay tribute to the men and women of our armed forces, the Police and other security and law enforcement agencies, who have been working under the most difficult conditions to keep the country safe. In the process, many have made the supreme sacrifice.
As their Commander-In-Chief, I assure these our gallant men and women that I will continue to empower them by deepening their professionalism and providing all the necessary force multipliers and enablers required for them to prevail on the field. I am looking into all reported cases of inadequacies in relation to their entitlements, their welfare and those of their families.
We are diversifying away from reliance on oil to increased manufacturing capacity, solid minerals development, and agriculture.
Efforts are on course in the Niger Delta to clean up polluted lands, restore hopes of the youths in the region and re-establish livelihoods, and strengthen their capacity to guarantee for themselves and for our country a brighter future.
The age-long conflict between herders and farmers that was being exploited by those seeking to plant the seeds of discord and disunity amongst our people, is being addressed decisively. We will sustain and continue to support the commendable efforts by all including civil society organisations, local and states governments and our traditional and religious leaders in finding durable solution to this problem.
This being a transhumance issue, we are working with countries in our region that are also facing similar difficulties to complement our common efforts. In this context I must warn that the perpetrators of murder and general mayhem in the name of defending or protecting herders or farmers will face the full wrath of the law. Meanwhile, we urge all peace loving Nigerians to reject any simplistic portrayal, at home or abroad, of this conflict as either religious or ethnic based.
We are one of the countries in the world most affected by environmental degradation, as a consequence of climate change. We are signatories to almost all conventions and agreements aimed at slowing down the effect of climate change and mitigating its now evident consequences.
The consequences on lives and livelihoods of the shrinking of the Lake Chad and the pollution caused by oil exploitation activities alone make it mandatory on us to be at the forefront of the struggle for a safer and more sustainable environment. We will continue to mobilise international support for our efforts in this regard.
We are making progress in the fight against corruption and recovery of stolen public funds and assets despite vicious and stiff resistance. The shameful past practice, of the brazen theft of billions of Naira is no more. Shady oil deals and public contracts that were never delivered have become things of the past.
Consequently, and this is very evident across the country, we have done more with less in infrastructural developments. Roads, railways, major bridges, schools, energy and power, air and sea ports, welfare of serving and retired personnel both civilian and military including payment of legacy debt such as pension arrears, have been attended to.
There is now an enabling environment for local and foreign investment in Nigeria. We are building a rules-based system – a level playing field that is free from fixers and intermediaries. This is the cornerstone to help genuine investors and honest consumers, and the platform that will allow for the real reforms that we intend to deliver over the coming years.
We are gradually strengthening the economy with a stable Naira and falling inflation rate. We are building an economy that is moving away from over reliance on oil. Consequently we have witnessed massive return to farms and seen bumper harvest, despite recurrent floods across the country.
These positive developments are the result of our collective pursuit of a common vision through hard work and dedication, after the missed opportunities and disappointments that followed the return to democracy in 1999.
At the forefront, have always been our youths. They have been at the vanguard of the struggle for independence. They fought in the war to keep the country united. And it was they who kept alive the struggle for democracy and human rights in our country at times when these were at risk, especially following the June 12th 1993 election and the historic 2015 election process.
Even today, our youths play a central role in Nigeria’s continuing progress and developments in all fields of our national endeavour –technology, agriculture, mining, engineering and especially the creative arts. Together we are building a more diverse, inclusive and self-reliant economy.
In the past three years we have introduced many policies and programmes targeted at youth development and youth empowerment. We support the ‘not too young to run’ legislation aimed at giving the youths greater say in our national politics and governance.
The school feeding program in primary schools is aimed at encouraging enrolment and attendance. We are building on what we have already introduced to support schools and universities to which funds have recently been released for upgrade of facilities, training programs for our entrepreneurs, and rehabilitation schemes for victims of terrorism and human trafficking.
Now we have in our hands technology that is a powerful tool that we can and should use for knowledge and understanding. As with other countries, we must also learn how to manage those tendencies that, instead, look to abuse new technologies to provoke passions and stir tensions.
Never before have we faced such a challenge. We must all rise to the responsibility of shutting out those disruptive and corrosive forces that hide in today’s world of social media. We need critical minds and independent thinking, to question and question until we are satisfied we have the facts. Otherwise, all the progress we have made as a democracy since 1999 is at stake.
I have committed myself many times to ensure that elections are fully participatory, free and fair and that the Independent National Electoral Commission will be exactly INDEPENDENT and properly staffed and resourced. The ballot box is how we make our choice for the governments that rule in our name.
Fellow Nigerians,
Developing a thriving democracy is not an easy task. There can be no quick fixes or short cuts. These are the most important lessons that we have learnt in our 58 years as an independent nation.
At the international level, we remain a responsible and respected member of the international community, playing active positive roles within ECOWAS, the African Union and the United Nations as well as all other regional and international organisations and institutions of which we are members.
We will continue to support initiatives aimed at addressing the challenges of our times: global and regional crises and conflicts, terrorism, trans-border crime, climate change, human rights, gender equality, development, poverty and inequality within and between nations, etc. In this context, we are working hard to achieve both the AU 2063 Agenda for socio-economic transformation of our continent; and the UN 2030 Agenda for sustainable development, which together aim at addressing these challenges.
As we celebrate the 58th Anniversary of our independence, we know we are on the right path. Although we have our differences, they count for far less than the values, virtues and common aspirations that unite us as a nation. We have so much for which we should be grateful, and in which we should rightly take pride. Our journey is not finished but we have come a long way.
I want to assure you that as President, I will continue to work tirelessly to promote, protect and preserve what really matters: a united, peaceful, prosperous and secure Nigeria, where all, irrespective of background, can aspire to succeed.
Thank you. I wish you a memorable independence celebration.

EXCLUSIVE: How Lawal Idris, Ex-Kogi Gov’s Son, Forged YabaTech Certificate To Win House Of Reps Seat

The following day a letter from Adenuga Adijat on behalf of the Registrar, addressed to the CP and titled ‘Re: Authentication of Certificate: Lawal Mohammed Idris’, disowned the said certificated. “Your request on above refers,” Adijat wrote. “Please be informed that Lawal Mohammed Idris was not a registered student of the college and the attached certificate which was said to have been issued to him did not emanate from Yaba college of Technology. Kindly discountenance his claim. Thank you.”
When Lawal Idris, the lawmaker representing Ajaokuta Federal Constituency of Kogi State, goes to the All Progressives Congress (APC) House of representatives primary as he formally begins his quest for another stint at the lower chamber, it will be with a forged certificate from Yaba College of Technology (Yabatech).
That certificate was already investigated by the Police and dismissed by the institution itself.
The Beginning
In early 2017, the Commissioner of Police, General Investigation Section, Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department of the Police at Alagbaon, Lagos, had received a complaint of forgery of institutional certificate/documents, attempted murder and threat to life against Idris. Acting on this, it wrote the Registrar of Yabatech for advice.
A letter on behalf of the Commissioner of Police by Abutu Yaro, a Deputy Commissioner of Police, to the Yabatech Registrar, exclusively obtained by SaharaReporters, read: “This Office is investigating the above mentioned case reported through petition by Mr. Aloysius .A. Okino.
“You are kindly requested to furnish this office with the following:
"I. Confirm if Lawal Mohammed Idris was actually a registered student of your institution and his Matriculation No. before being awarded a National Diploma Certificate in BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION with LOWER CREDIT on the 26th day of June 1987.
"II. Confirm the authenticity /genuinety or otherwise of the attached certificate awarded and duly signed on 20th of October 1990 to the aforementioned candidate, and
"III. Any other relevant information that could enhance our investigation in this case.
"Your prompt response will be appreciated, please.”
Attached to that letter was a document purportedly from Yabatech, which read: “This is to certify that Lawal Muhammed Idris, having passed the prescribed examinations, has on the 26th day of June 1987 been awarded the NATIONAL DIPLOMA In Business Administration Lower Credit.”
The certificate was supposedly signed by the registrar and the Rector. It was dated October 20, 1990.
Follow-up
On April 10, 2017, the Police followed that up with an invitation the Yaba Tech Registrar. This second letter, also written by Yaro, read: “This office is investigating the above mentioned case reported through petition by Mr. Aloysius .A. Okino, in which your office features prominently.
“In view of this, you are therefore requested to report for an interview with the Commissioner of Police, General Investigation Section, Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex, Alagbon Close Ikoyi, Lagos on Wednesday 12th April, 2017 at 1000hrs in connection with a case under investigation.
“You are to report to the Officer-in –Charge ‘LEGAL. SEC GI’ who will take you before the Commissioner of Police.
“This request is compelled by urgent law enforcement requirement and you are kindly further requested to treat with utmost urgency.
“Accept the esteemed regards of the commissioner of police please.”
The Verdict
The following day a letter from Adenuga Adijat on behalf of the Registrar, addressed to the CP and titled ‘Re: Authentication of Certificate: Lawal Mohammed Idris’, disowned the said certificated.
“Your request on above refers,” Adijat wrote.
“Please be informed that Lawal Mohammed Idris was not a registered student of the college and the attached certificate which was said to have been issued to him did not emanate from Yaba college of Technology.
“Kindly discountenance his claim. Thank you.”
Arrest And Dismissal of The Accomplice
Yabatech then embarked on its own internal investigations, and fished out its member of staff who helped Idris forge the certificate.
In September 2017, Charles Oni, its Director of Public Relations and Media, disclosed the name of the dismissed staff member as Seun Adekoya.
He said Adekoya, a registry staff member who was involved in sale of certificate to the serving federal lawmaker, was arrested by the State Crime Investigation Division (SCID) and detained but later granted bail.
When operatives of the SCID searched Adekoya’s house, blank Yabatech certificates, statement of results, stamp pad and other college items were found.
After his release on bail, Adekoya, who was queried by Yabatech management and later dismissed from the institution, also jumped bail.
“After he was released on bail, he resigned his appointment but the college rejected it and dismissed him,” Oni had said back then.
“If he is on bail, the Police should look for him. We don’t know anything about his whereabouts. When his house was searched, all manner of college materials were found.”
Adekoya’s Confessions
In his statements to the Police, Adekoya, 35, confessed to forging a 1987 National Diploma certificate for Idris.
He stated that he got to know Idris through a friend called Kunle Owoseni in September 2015; and that after Kunle had introduced Idris to him in the school premises as his direct boss, Idris later approached him in confidence that he presented fake 1987 National Diploma Certificate of Yaba College of Technology to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) when he was to contest for a seat in the House of Representatives in 2015, and that he needed a perfection of the forged certificate.
He stated further that having collected photocopy of the fake result, he did a fake perfection for him in consideration for payment of N10million, which he shared with Kunle Owoseni and some other staff of the college.
He also confessed it wasn’t his first time faking results of Yabatech for interested persons and politicians during the period when he worked with Ologunore Jasper Abiodun and Peter Oyebanji of Exams & Academic Record in Year 2016.
He said since he had direct access to the Department of Exam and Records, which made it easier for him to be in possession of original school results, he always advised his candidates to originate letter of confirmation of such fake results from their respective offices, which he normally intercepted and treated personally by replying such organisations that the fake results were genuine.
He revealed that he had done fake results for notable Nigerians, such as Wilson Sandra, attached to Edo State Government in the Department of Internal Revenue, Ejoubo Petera, Abayomi Ojo Ajayi, Flora Bassey Oke, Deru Olayinka Folashade and Olubunmi Olufunke, attached to the Department of State Security (DSS) in Ikeja, Lagos.
He added that he usually compensated the office of the registrar through his boss, Jasper Abiodun. He listed some of those he had settled as Mrs. Adewale Iziogba, Ogunore Jasper Abiodun, Aluko Olugbenga , Arejiogbe Bayo, Funke Madamidola, Mrs Helen Ibitayo, Olagunju Nasiru and Amapakabo Charity.
Forged success
With the aid of the forged certificate, Idris passed INEC’s screening and earned a seat at the House of Representatives, and even went on to chair the House Committee on Steel.
He is currently seeking a second term in office on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

POLL :2019 NIGERIA PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION, WHO WILL YOU VOTE FOR? | 9JABOARD

2019 NIGERIA PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION, WHO WILL YOU VOTE FOR?

BREAKING: Sanwo-Olu Was Arrested For Spending Fake US Dollars In A Night Club, Says Ambode

“This particular aspirant — you can go and check, the records are there — is somebody that has been arrested for spending fake American dollars in a night club," AMbode said.
Akinwunmi Ambode, Governor of Lagos State, says the man “being propelled” to campaign against him, lacks credibility.
Although he didn’t expressly mention his name, Ambode was clearly referring to Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the anointed candidate of Bola Tinubu, National leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), to take over from him in 2019.
He warned leaders and members of the party that they had been deceived into thinking his opponent was a greter candidate than him.
“In the last two or three weeks, they’ve been put up a campaign of calumny in the social media and also disparaging our personality and our character, but we have never responded; we have never abused anybody — because we believe that there’s always a reason for us to come together as a family,” he said on Sunday while addressing a ‘World Press Conference’.
“We are one family in the APC, but the truth is this, the aspirant that is being put up to compete against us is not a fit and proper person to take this position. This is the truth.
“Party leaders and party members have been misled into thinking that this is a greater candidate than me. I have done everything in the last three and a half years to serve people selflessly and to serve the poor. Most of the projects we are doing are about alleviating the sufferings of the poor. And the only way out for us is to continue to do that in the next four years.
“This particular aspirant — you can go and check, the records are there — is somebody that has been arrested for spending fake American dollars in a night club.”
Ambode rounded off his speech by urging party leaders not to allow the opposition take away lagos from them by fielding a weak candidate.
